Best Bicycle in the USA by Mechanic at The Best Bike Shop in Los Angeles

Ok. You've never seen anything like this bike. It has stuff no one has tried before and lived to tell about it. Get ready for something that you'll be bringing the kids in to see. You may be reminded of Susan Boyle type fame here. You may want one of these after you see it, but it may be really hard to duplicate. Ready, set, start the movie.

It all started with Pat

The founder of what is now Pat's 605 Cyclery still has his name on the sign. Pat Patterson came home from the Great War and fell in love with bicycles. He enjoyed the sport so much that he made it a career. In a future post we will spend some time with and share some pictures from that era.

Today the shop is in the hands of the 2nd generation, Ron. To be sure he is ably assisted by his son Rick, who has been with the shop for a huge part of his life. Ron has built the shop into a major force in the neighborhood. The store is well known for its expert repairs, its friendliness, and for having every possible kind of bicycle item one could hope for.

Ron and Rick look forward to meeting you and helping you with any part of your bicycling needs. They can help with proper fitting to ensure that you get a comfortable ride. They can help with the choice of which ride will best suit your plans.

We would also invite you to participate in this blog with articles and comments. You can submit your articles or ideas to patscycle@verizon.net

TREK Road Bicycles - Pat's 605 is the Place for Selection and Service

There is a reason that Trek Bicycle Company is the number 1 seller of bicycles in America, and the new Road bike series is one of those reasons. Pat's 605 stocks a full range of these awesome bikes, and the following short video features the Trek 1.5.

Fixed Gear, Single Speed, Fixie Bikes, Frames, Forks, Components In Stock NOW!

There is a movement afoot, and that movement is coming at you with midnight and moonlight rides, drag races, relays, and almost any excuse to ride a bike and combine it with a party. Some are dragging very old, but serviceable lightweight frames and adding the latest components to create totally unique rides. Others are buying frames and building up colorful and slick bikes that move with speed and grace, sometime with brakes, sometimes not.

And for those who prefer the bike ready-to-ride, Schwinn has an offering called the Madison and KHS has joined in with the Flight series. Below are quick videos that detail out these two outstanding fixed gear bikes. Please note that all fixed gear bikes can be easily converted to single speed through the use of flip-flop hubs, and most now can easily have rear brakes added.

Fit Is the FUNNEST BMX Brand at Pat's 605 Cyclery

Nobody knows the BMX business like the crew over at Pat's 605. They've been around since before there even was a BMX. But they've got some young dudes on the staff who have been around and around the tracks in SOCAL, and they're saying some very nice things about Fit. So Rick Patterson had this to say about the Fit brand.

Buy Your Stolen (BRAND) Bicycles at Pat's 605 Cyclery in Norwalk

Let's be clear. Ron Patterson has not decided to sell stolen property at his shop. But he has decided to carry the hugely popular Stolen Brand of BMX bikes, frames, and gear. Rick Patterson decided to steal the show the other day, and had this to say about the Stolen product:

Pat's Adds Electric - Bicycles That Is - I-Zip

You love riding your bike, but there are times you would also like to have someone give you a little extra shove. Now that extra shove is as easy as clicking over to the electric motor on your new wheels.

The new I-Zip bicycles recently added at Pat's 605 go 15 miles an hour with no pedal assist. The can go up to 20 if you add your own power. The bikes have various ranges depending upon the weight of the bike, the batteries used, and the terrain you are riding, but the lowest range is 18 miles, and the top of the line bike can go up to 35 miles on a charge.

Here is a short video of the products offered.

Pat's 605 Cyclery to Sponsor Multiple Sclerosis Ride - Bike to the Finish

On October 11,2008, 2500 riders will strike out from Irvine, Ca. (Orange County) and finishing in San Diego, Ca. with an overnight stay and festival in Carlsbad. Total ride will be 150 miles over the two days. While the ride would be fun to do anyway, the reason behind this event is to raise $1,000,000 in the fight to find a cure for MS.

This ride was known as the MS150, and is one of over 100 such rides in the US to benefit MS. The new name for the ride is Bike to the Finish and this tour is specifically known as the Bay to Bay Tour. For details go here.

Pat's 605 Cyclery is a key sponsor of the event, providing discounts on all products (except bicycles) to participants in the ride. In addition Pat's is hosting training rides on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and will be doing a safety class.

Pat's is also hoping to get a team together for the tour. Each team member would raise money for MS, but MS provides a detailed instruction for how to do that. It will be easy to raise the needed funds. If you would be interested in being a member of the Pat's 605 team for the Bike to the Finish event, please call 562-864-0740 or e-mail patscycle@verizon.net. Of course, you can come by the store to register also.

Here's a video about the event:

Touring the Shop

I dropped by Pat's 605 Cyclery the other day and snapped a few photos. Allow me to give you a guided tour of the place. First of all, they've got it ALL. This first picture was taken through a fish eye mirror in the center of the store to dramatize the amazing variety of product available at this family bicycle shop in Norwalk, CA.

Family shop is the operative term, here. Ron and the gang are perfectly happy and capable to help serious riders with their product decisions, fittings, and all the rest, but most of the business is done with kids of all ages who just want a bike for the fun of it. Check out the kids bikes and unicycles for instance.

Maybe your more into the cruiser scene. This woodside was just one of dozens of cool, very comfortable bikes with nice wide seats and big fat tires.

Maybe your ride needs a new wheel. I'm pretty sure you will find what you want from the huge selection available. But if not, most of the time, your only a day away from a custom order. With Pat's 605 being located in the very middle of Los Angeles County, there are several distributors within just a few miles of the shop.

The selection list goes on and on. I don't want to bore you, but there are several lines of road bikes, mountain bikes, bmx racing bikes, and any other kind of bike known to man. Then there is a fully stocked BMX department with all the coolest parts, accessories, and stickers. And then there are soft goods like gloves and socks and bags. You will really like the cycling clothes section. Her is a sample from that department.

Well, that concludes the tour for today... Or almost. Just one more stop. No bicycle store stays in business for over 50 years unless they have developed and maintained a reputation for flawless service and repair. Keep in mind the second and third generation of Patterson's are teaching and overseeing the service department, and they are certainly focused on making sure you are thrilled with the work they do on your bike. Here is Joe, one of the companies best wrench jocks, making sure that wheel is perfect in every way for your next ride.

Remember, Pat's 605 Cyclery is located on Studebaker between Firestone and Imperial Hwy. That makes it less than 2 minutes from the 5 (Santa Ana) Fwy, the 605 and the 105. If you live in Downey, Santa Fe Springs, Bellflower, or Pico Rivera, this is your closest full service bicycle shop. If you live in Whittier, Cerritos, Buena Park, or Paramount, it is merely the friendliest within a 15 minute drive for you.
